Sociolinguistics

GIG323317 Sociolinguistics, English Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education

This course is intended to provide the undergraduate students with a sound, basic coverage of most of the topics dealt with sociolinguistics. Sociolinguistics is still clearly unified through its concern with how people use language to create and express identities, relate to one another in groups, and seek to resist, protect, or increase various kinds of power (Wardhough, 2006). The course includes knowledge of language, languages, dialects, styles, registers and genres, speech communities and communities of practice, multilingualism, language variation and change, ethnographic approaches in sociolinguistics, sociolinguistics and social justice, sociolinguistics and education. Upon the completion of the course, the students are expected to (a) have a solid understanding of the fundamental concepts in sociolinguistics, and (b) be able to do some sociolinguistic analyses.
